How GloGuardian™ Was Born
GloGuardian™ was sparked by an “aha!” moment in the middle of the night.
I woke up and noticed a faint glow coming from under our adjustable bed. It was just the small light from the power supply. The room was otherwise completely dark, yet that subtle glow caught my attention. It looked cool… but it gave me a feeling of comfort.
My first thought was: “This would be perfect for kids who are afraid of the monsters under the bed.”
The next morning, I started researching nightlights. There were plenty designed for dressers, outlets, or projections on walls and ceilings, but none created specifically to live under the bed.
That surprised me.
If a child is afraid of monsters under the bed, those nightlights simply brighten the room. They don’t actually address the darkness under the bed, which is the place where that child would be afraid of most.
A light placed under the bed would illuminate that space completely, reassuring a child that nothing is hiding there. At the same time, it would create a calming glow without lighting up the entire room, which is important for a good night sleep.
That’s when I realized this wasn’t just an idea. It was an opportunity…
From Idea to Prototype
AA a graphic designer, my instinct was to create.
I began sketching a friendly nighttime “guardian”. A cute, friendly looking “monster” that protects kids from the imaginary monsters they fear.
Next, I needed to see if the idea would actually work the way it did in my head.
I built a rough prototype using clay and a simple puck light. It wasn’t pretty, but when I turned off the lights and placed it under my bed, it created exactly the effect I was hoping for.
In that moment, I knew. This was something I wanted to pursue. I wanted to create a new type of nightlight, one designed specifically to help children who are afraid of monsters under the bed. Somthing that surprisingly, hasn’t been done yet.
Soon after, I reached out to my creative friend Patt, who works in 3D printing. I sent him my design, and he began rendering and printing prototypes. I’ve since shared them with friends who have young children, and the response so far has been incredibly encouraging.
What’s Next?
Now, I’m continuing to gather feedback and actively searching for the right manufacturing partner to help bring GloGuardian™ to life.
This is still just the beginning of the story. I’m excited for what comes next. Stay tuned
